Sleeve\u00a0 gastrectomy\u00a0 has\u00a0 evolved\u00a0 as\u00a0 a\u00a0 bariatric\u00a0 procedure\u00a0 over\u00a0 the\u00a0 last\u00a0 two\u00a0 decades.\u00a0 It was\u00a0 introduced\u00a0 as\u00a0 the restrictive\u00a0 component\u00a0 of the\u00a0 biliopancreatic\u00a0 diversioon.\u00a0 Subsequently\u00a0 after\u00a0 10\u00a0 years, laparoscopic s leeve\u00a0 gastrectomy\u00a0 was\u00a0 used\u00a0 as\u00a0 a\u00a0 bridging\u00a0 procedure in\u00a0 super-morbidly\u00a0 obese\u00a0 patients, usually\u00a0 followed\u00a0 by\u00a0 a\u00a0 definite\u00a0 procedure\u00a0 as\u00a0 laparoscopic\u00a0 Roux-en-Y\u00a0 gastric\u00a0 bypass\u00a0 or\u00a0 biliopancreatic\u00a0 diversion\u00a0 and\u00a0 duodenal \u00a0switch.<\/p>\n

Laparoscopic\u00a0 Sleeve\u00a0 gastrectomy\u00a0 as a stand-alone\u00a0 procedure\u00a0 has\u00a0 since\u00a0 grown\u00a0 throughout\u00a0 the world and\u00a0 has been\u00a0 verifed\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0 First\u00a0 and Second\u00a0 International\u00a0 Consensus\u00a0 Summit\u00a0 for\u00a0 Sleeve\u00a0 Gastrectomy\u00a0 in 2007\u00a0 and 2009,\u00a0 respectively, as a\u00a0 safe\u00a0 and\u00a0 feasible\u00a0 bariatric\u00a0 procedure.\u00a0 It\u00a0 is a\u00a0 restrictive\u00a0 procedure,\u00a0 but\u00a0 with\u00a0 the\u00a0 removal\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 fundus\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 stomach, it\u00a0 reduces\u00a0 the\u00a0 volume\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 glands\u00a0 that\u00a0 produce\u00a0 ghrelin\u00a0 and\u00a0 thus\u00a0 also\u00a0 functions\u00a0 as\u00a0 an\u00a0 appetite\u00a0 suppressor.<\/p>\n

Some\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 advantages\u00a0 of\u00a0 LSG\u00a0 include\u00a0 its\u00a0 technical\u00a0 simplicity, the\u00a0 satisfying\u00a0 restrictive\u00a0 result, and\u00a0 the\u00a0 low\u00a0 incidence\u00a0 or\u00a0 absence\u00a0 of\u00a0 complications\u00a0 such\u00a0 as\u00a0 anastomotic\u00a0 stricture\u00a0 and\u00a0 marginal\u00a0 ulceration,\u00a0 internal\u00a0 herniation,\u00a0 dumping\u00a0 symptoms,\u00a0 slippage, and\u00a0 erosioon\u00a0 seen\u00a0 in\u00a0 ohter\u00a0 well-established\u00a0 procedures. Various\u00a0\u00a0 authors \u00a0throughout\u00a0 the\u00a0 world\u00a0 have\u00a0 published\u00a0 effective\u00a0 results\u00a0 with\u00a0 LSG\u00a0 as\u00a0 a\u00a0 definitive\u00a0 bariatric procedure. In\u00a0 an\u00a0 expert\u00a0 review\u00a0 published\u00a0 by Abu-Jaish\u00a0 et\u00a0 al.,\u00a0 authors\u00a0 mentioned\u00a0 that\u00a0 despite\u00a0 a\u00a0 wide\u00a0 range\u00a0 of\u00a0 average\u00a0 excess\u00a0 weight\u00a0 loss(EWL)\u00a0 between\u00a0 33%\u00a0 and\u00a0 83%, LSG\u00a0 might be\u00a0 as\u00a0 effective\u00a0 as\u00a0 traditional\u00a0 weight\u00a0 loss surgeries\u00a0 that\u00a0 commonly\u00a0 attain\u00a0 an\u00a0 average\u00a0 EWL\u00a0 of 60\u00a0 to\u00a0 85%\u00a0 one year\u00a0 after\u00a0 surgery.*<\/p>\n

Not\u00a0 only\u00a0 is\u00a0 the\u00a0 excessive\u00a0 weight\u00a0 loss\u00a0 after\u00a0 LSG\u00a0 sufficient\u00a0 and\u00a0 lasting\u00a0 in\u00a0 many\u00a0 patients,\u00a0 but\u00a0 there\u00a0 are no\u00a0 necessary\u00a0 anastomoses,\u00a0 the\u00a0 remaining\u00a0 stomach\u00a0 is\u00a0 still\u00a0 approachable\u00a0 for\u00a0 endoscopy, and\u00a0 postoperative\u00a0 supplementation\u00a0 of\u00a0 vitamins\u00a0 and\u00a0 micronutrients\u00a0 is\u00a0 rarely\u00a0 required.*<\/p>\n

However, LSG\u00a0 has\u00a0 a\u00a0 specific\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0morbidity\u00a0 pattern\u00a0 in\u00a0 which\u00a0 gastric\u00a0 staple\u00a0 line\u00a0 leak \u00a0is\u00a0 the\u00a0 main\u00a0 complication.\u00a0 Although\u00a0 gastric\u00a0 leak\u00a0 after\u00a0 LSG\u00a0 occurs\u00a0 in\u00a0 less\u00a0 than\u00a0 5% of\u00a0 patients, it\u00a0 significantly\u00a0 increases\u00a0 the\u00a0 hospidal\u00a0 length\u00a0 of\u00a0 stay\u00a0 and\u00a0 can\u00a0 be\u00a0 lifethreatening.<\/p>\n

Gastric\u00a0 Sleeve\u00a0 Surgery\u00a0 may\u00a0 not\u00a0 be\u00a0 an\u00a0 option\u00a0 for\u00a0 peole, who\u00a0 have\u00a0 significant\u00a0 issues\u00a0 with\u00a0 a\u00a0 hiatus\u00a0 hernia\u00a0 or\u00a0 a\u00a0 history\u00a0 of\u00a0 severe\u00a0\u00a0 gastroesophageal\u00a0 reflux\u00a0 disease.\u00a0 This\u00a0 is\u00a0 because\u00a0 once\u00a0 the\u00a0 gastric\u00a0 sleeve\u00a0 procedures\u00a0 is\u00a0 perfomed,\u00a0 further\u00a0 gastric\u00a0 reflux\u00a0 surgery\u00a0 generally\u00a0 cannot\u00a0 be\u00a0 done.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
